Mission DVD Player

The DVD drives both in my laptop and PC were dead. When you have something u don’t feel its need that much but when it’s not there suddenly its need arieses. The same thing happened and now we wanted to watch movies kept in dvds. So finally we decided to come with a solution and decided to connect our DVD player with the PC. Before you ask why did I not connect it with TV, our TV was also not working for last few days :D.

So the search began at home first and we found our external TV tuner card at home. The next thing was information about how to connect it with PC and as expected manual was missing. Then the search began on internet and we found all the information. All the connections were made, every device switched on, Colored Mughal-E-Azam dvd inserted and wow !!!. We could listen to audio but no picture visible.

But as it had been decided that today is the day when system should work, me n my sis decided to get a new TV tuner box. So the search again began on internet to get an idea about prices of TV tuner box and we finally found it fits our budget. So I went to market straigtaway and bought a TV tuner box.

This time we had the manual with us. So again  all the connections were made, every device switched on, Colored Mughal-E-Azam dvd inserted and wow !!!. We could see the video but no sound output. It was so irritating and we joked we should get both TV tuner boxes to work together if we want to make it work.

I again went back to shop, discovered that I need to have woffers if I want to connect speakers to recently bought TV tuner box. I was not gonna buy a woffer just to get a sound output and knew certainly there should be some way. I was arguing with the shop owner and his subordinate came with a solution , colloquially known as ‘jugad’. He gave me an extra cable, explained the connections and we were able to get the sound output from my new TV tuner box.

I thanked that man for his ‘jugad’ and came back home. Once again all the connections were made, every device switched on, Colored Mughal-E-Azam dvd inserted and wow !!!. We could enjoy the show this time :). Four hours of efforts finally paid off and learnt a new thing. ‘Jugad Technology’ works most of the times ūüôā

P.S.¬† For those who don’t have word ‘jugad’ in their dictionary, it’s a colloquial word in hindi meaning finding a way somehow to solve a problem ūüôā

Technology has changed tremendously in last 10 years. The arrival of computers, internet, cellphones and other gadgest in our daily lives has changed our life styles to great extent. It is very exciting for people of my generation to see all these changes but it’s not easy for our parents and grandparents to handle the fast changing world. They are not comfortable with the new technologies becoming part of their lives and in fact they tend to have a Technophobia.

When cell phones prices went down few years back and they started becoming part of our lives, I could easily catch up and learn to use it. But it was not same for my parents and when I looked around this was the case with parents of most of the people of my generation. My father learnt to call and send sms soon but he was reluctant to learn other features that came along. My mother was reluctant to learn even that. She was happy asking us every time to make a call.

Same thing continued with computers too. My father picked up and learnt to use at least basic software but my mom was again reluctant to learn to use it. Whenever we asked her to use it, she would reply, ” Why should I learn?” It was just reversal from childhood and now we wanted her to learn everything and she was running away from studies. Later on I came to realize it’s just not happening in our home but was happening everywhere. I think there may be some ‘bright old parents’ who got expert quickly but for majority of old generation people using new gadgets like digital camera, music and dvd players, cellphones is still a nightmare.

But then we slowly understood their problems, became more patient while teaching them and started coming out with new ways of teaching. I remember when I had to explain her difference between hard disk and floppy disk storage capacity, I came up with analogy of difference between storage capacity of a bucket and a glass:). Sometimes these stupid things do work. She started to take interest and came with queries about different things. Another factor that forced her to learn was the introduction of computers in office work. It sound laughable that it took her so much time to learn but it was difficult for her for sure. Be it learning to control mouse or remembering which command does what.

My father was comfortable with using computers and learnt to use internet too but he was afraid of installing software thinking he might commit some mistake and computer will be dead. But after some encouragement and assurance that nothing incurable can happen to computer due to just installing software, he tried that first in front of me. Later on when I and my sis went away from home for our studies, he continued learning installations over phone and now hopefully he is no more afraid to do that.

I feel its my duty to get them familiar with new technologies and keep them up with changes happening aroud. It’s really fun to teach them new things and see the happiness on their faces when they learn something. I taught my father to use gtalk few months back and now he can use a few smileys while chatting with us. Our next job is to teach him some chat abbreviations like gn,btw, gtg, asap n so on. He can send emails, surf the web, chat with us and may be in few years would be designing his web page.

Today my mother can use basic cellphone features like calling, sending sms, saving phone numbers. She can use Microsoft Word and Excel’s features and play song on Winamp media player. She is curious to know about sending and receiving emails. May be one day she will code a C program of¬† “Hello Word” :). After all life is all about crazy dreams and setting big goals.

Post Type : Short Story

He was in a boring class and as usual busy in teasing at last bench. The¬† professor¬† was extending his class even at the end of lecture. All the students were¬† waiting for lecture to get over and go for lunch. The class was about to end. Suddenly a girl¬† stood up with bunch of questions. Every one went furious on girl including him. First of all, how one could decode Professor’s words and secondly even¬† after decoding how one could dare to ask question at the end of his endless lecture.

He noticed it was a new face , pretty childish and innocent. She had joined the institute in spring session. Slowly they  became friends unknowingly.  Gradually their friendship was becoming deeper. They started sharing everything, used to talk in late  nights.

He realized that its time to say before its too late. He proposed her on last day of his semester. Luckily the answer was yes!!! Everything changed after that for them. They lived for one another. From morning till late night they used to be together. He gradually came to know that she was very shy and religious. He liked it very much. After all who would not love a girl who prays for him. Slowly college days came to an end. But she had to stay in college for 6 more months as she joined in spring.

He was worried for her, how she will live without him. It was the last day for the college. They decided to stay together along with all the friends that night. He was very sad as from next day, he wont be able to see her. They were playing cards. She was tired and caught a sleep. She was looking very pretty and innocent. He kissed her softly and she responded with a smile. It was the most romantic moment of his¬† life, but then he realized that he was getting carried away by emotions. He stopped himself at that moment. He couldn’t sleep for¬† the whole night and was¬† just looking at her pretty face. Finally they¬† parted for their destinations.

He joined his job and they were communicating through cell phones. After 6 months her degree got completed. Then one day she told him that she can’t continue their relationship as her parents will never allow. This broke everything inside him. He didn’t know how will he live without her. He tried to convince her but finally he gave up to see her happy.

He said to her , “Its ok. I will be happy even as ur friend. What matters to me is ur happiness.”¬† She didn’t call him for a month after that. He was constantly worried about her. How is she? Is she alright? He called her many times. She didn’t reply to his calls.

Finally one day she called and said, “I¬† hate you . I have never seen cheap person like you. You cheated me that night and ur intention were not right and this is the reason I am leaving you .” This shattered everything inside him. He tried his level best to convince her that what she thought was wrong, but she didn’t believe a word. Their¬† friends also tried to convince her a lot. All she said is that whatever he did was all¬† fake.

Even with all her hatred, he did whatever he could¬† do for her. He just wanted to see her happy. But she did not believe him. He still lives with her hatred. His heart is broken. He still asks a question to himself. “What went wrong?”. Can you answer?
